Narrative Essay

Journey to A New Life

After a time of 3 months, my SPM result was finally out. I had to go all the way back from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS to my hometown just to get the result. The journey has changed my attitude towards study, my way of thinking and the way I treat my parents.

I was walking in the coach of the train to check where is my seat. Suddenly a blind, young lady showed up and she was the one who was going to sit with me. Without realizing anything around me, I put on my earphones connected to my iPod and listened to music. The young lady did nothing other than reading a book. Her book was definitely a special one, full with no word but dots. I knew it was the Braille's Language and I asked the lady normally how long will she take to finish a book. She replied one day for a short stories. I was shocked by her answer and I decided to work hard and read more books and articles to improve my knowledge of the world. Even a blind lady reads more than me and I thought of I couldn't live any longer with my attitude studying in university. I have to change, I told myself.

After that, I took out the newest Reader's Digest magazine from my backpack and started reading it. I flipped through every page to see any articles that were interesting. A title caught my eyes, 'The Poor Maid'. It was written by a reader whose her maid was blamed for the lost of her mother-in-law's jewelries. The reader had no choice but to obey her mother-in-law to sack the poor maid. The truth was that the jewelries were hidden in somewhere else and the reader found out years later before the death of her mother-in-law. She told the reader that she found out long time ago that the jewelries were not stolen and she did not want to die with regrets. So she asked her daughter-in-law to apologize to the poor maid. In the end the reader failed to find the maid and finally decided to write the article to inform the poor maid that they were sorry about it. I learned that we should always investigate a problem before jumping into a conclusion without any further explore.

The train reached the Tanjung Malim station, the blind girl sat next to me left the train. But came another old lady. We managed to have some conversation. She told me about the reason she was on the train. She was going to visit her mother. I was stoned. The lady was no younger than 60 as she told me she is a retiree and her mother is still alive. I wondered why she took the train because I thought she might have kids or something. She told me her children were all grown up and having their own family. I asked her again why her mother didn't want to stay with her and she told me that her mother want to spend the rest of her life in her hometown. Along the conversation we spoke nothing but English. Being an English teacher and never went to Chinese school explained that well. No matter how old we are, we must always take good care of our parents because you have no idea when can we treat them good. We are their children and do not wait anymore. They sacrificed so many things for us but why can't we just spend a little time for them? I told myself I have to treat my parents better as they are no longer young and I am no longer a kid. I have to take care of the family soon.

Finally the train stopped at Rawang station, where my hometown was located. I grabbed my luggage and backpack and left the train which I have learnt so many from the journey. I appreciate everything that came into my life because I know everything has its own reason to happen.
